A very warm welcome to Year Three's class page. As a team, we are very excited to share the learning experiences of the pupils, important information and overviews of the contexts for learning.

'Cherish the natural world because you are part of it, and you depend on it.' Sir David Attenborough

Our new context for learning this term is 'Reboot!' Pupils will be considering how they can look after the world in which we live and love. There will be lots of exciting learning opportunities on offer. For example, to bring the curriculum to life, pupils will be using virtual reality to explore the life of insects from their perspective and visiting local allotments.

In the following weeks, the pupils will be provided with opportunities to experience:

  • Undertaking a design and making project as part of a school fayre enterprise
  • Carrying out investigative tasks on suitability of materials for a bee bomb
  • Using literacy skills to create an allotment campaign and when designing packaging
  • Asking good questions and using their knowledge of what they know to support their research skills using a range of sources
  • Using measurements in technology when designing, making and evaluating a pollinator project
  • Applying financial literacy skills when budgeting for an enterprise activity
  • Contributing to deep and meaningful questions based on a variety of stimuli using visible thinking routines and Philosophy for Children (P4C) sessions
  • Understanding collective citizenship and the importance of looking after our world (sustainability), including the immediate environment of the school allotments
  • Exploring how growing and buying local produce has a positive impact on individual carbon footprints
  • Immersing themselves in real-life experiences; to include visits from school partners from the world of work to support the context, e.g. horticultural experts, beekeepers
  • Innovating and constructing seed packaging prototypes using new ideas, thinking flexibly and thinking together
  • Looking at local, national and international contexts (corporate responsibility) through the historical lens of allotments
  • Creating stories based on the natural world and developing campaign posters using DCF skills
  • Understanding the importance of food in religious festivals such as the Jewish celebration Rosh Hashanah
  • Producing creative work in the style of the Welsh artist Cedric Morris
  • Researching the benefits of honey on health
  • Sharing nature-themed stories such as The Happy Hedgerow by Elena Mannion

'Somewhere in the folds of the countryside, Old Oak lives content and fulfilled in his hedgerow by the barley field. When the farmer pulls up the Far Hedgerow one day, Old Oak is dismayed. Can he care for all the fleeing birds? The field is now too open, and the wind and rain are carrying away the soil! Hope is finally returned when a new farmer comes to plant saplings one cold winter’s morning.'

We are looking forward to sharing the enterprise products made at the upcoming Danescourt School Fayre!
